Mental health challenges are prevalent amongst teens, with 1 in 3 students reporting “persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness.” With this comes so many young adults not being equipped enough to help themselves or those around them. That’s where Teen Mental Health First Aid (tMHFA) comes in. tMHFA is an impactful program that teaches teens how to recognize, respond, and support mental health concerns in their peers.

What is Teen Mental Health First Aid?

Teen Mental Health First Aid is an evidence-based training program developed by the National Council for Mental Wellbeing and supported by organizations like Mental Health First Aid USA. Unlike traditional health classes, tMHFA is specifically designed for teenagers to help other teenagers.

  • How to recognize signs and symptoms of mental health or substance use problems.
  • How to offer initial support to a friend who may be experiencing a crisis.
  • How to connect their friend with a trusted adult or professional help.

The curriculum is taught by certified instructors (in person or online) and typically delivered over several sessions in schools or community organizations.

Why Is Teen Mental Health First Aid Important?

  • Addresses a Critical Need: Mental health issues often begin during adolescence. According to the CDC: Nearly 1 in 3 high school students report persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among teens and young adults. Early support and intervention can make a big difference, and teens are often the first to notice when their friends are struggling.
  • Empowers Young People: Teens spend much of their time with peers. tMHFA empowers them to talk confidently about mental health, reduce stigma, and know when and how to seek help.
  • Promotes a Supportive School Climate: When students feel that their classmates care and can be trusted, school communities become safer and more inclusive.
  • Complements Adult Support: While teens are not expected to act as counselors or solve problems alone, they can be vital connectors to trusted adults.

What Do Teens Learn?

  • Look for warning signs.
  • Ask how your friend is feeling.
  • Listen non-judgmentally.
  • Encourage your friend to seek help.
  • Tell a trusted adult.

How Can Schools and Communities Get Involved?

Many schools across the U.S. have adopted Teen Mental Health First Aid as part of their health education or wellness programs. To bring tMHFA to your school or community:

  • Contact Mental Health First Aid USA to find certified trainers.
  • Partner with local mental health organizations or school districts.
  • Advocate for mental health education as a priority in youth programming.

Teen Mental Health First Aid equips young people with knowledge and confidence to help themselves and their peers. At a time when mental health challenges among teens are rising, this program is essential.

Whether you are a student, parent, educator, or community member, learning about tMHFA and supporting its implementation can help build a healthier, more compassionate generation.
